Quest Designer
Have you been waiting for a chance to get paid for making jokes and crafting quests so goofy that players can't help but tell their friends about it? The time has come.
As our new Quest Designer, you’ll join a multidisciplinary team working on a game where a perfectly named achievement matters just as much as a well-structured quest. Overall, your job is to make the world more fun to play in: designing quests, writing silly dialogue, and making sure every piece of writing, from in-game instructions to app store copy, feels consistent, lighthearted, and funny.
Here’s what that looks like day to day
Collaborating closely with one of our game designers who handles the systems and spaces while you handle the stories, objectives, and words that fill them.
Designing quests by working with existing systems and finding interesting ways to combine them.
Thinking through quest architecture: breaking quests into their components, mapping how objectives, rewards, and NPC interactions connect, and making sure the logic holds together when players start making unexpected choices.
Writing short, punchy and witty dialogue, item names, quest titles, achievement descriptions, and the occasional bit of app store or other external copy.
Documenting your work so your team stays aligned.
Must-haves
A strong portfolio with game writing samples.
Expertise working with quest and dialog setups, preferably using branching node graphs or similar.
Native or near-native English. So much of what makes comedy writing work is the ability to play with language, subvert expectations, and land a joke in three words. Wit lives in the details, and that requires a very deep relationship with the language.
Comfort working within someone else’s creative vision rather than your own, as you’ll be diving into something that already exists and expanding on it.
Expertise in at least one game engine. We use Unity so that’s preferred, but experience across multiple engines works too.
A structured approach to design work and documentation, so your team can work more effectively together.
A resilient attitude toward change and ambiguity. There’s some of both here, so we’d rather be upfront: not everything is figured out yet, and that’s part of the job.
Nice-to-haves
Experience with quest-heavy games. You know what good looks like because you’ve played a lot of it, and that shows up in your work.
Experience designing for multiplayer. Making a game for multiplayer always adds complexity, and knowing how to identify and elegantly handle all the edge cases can make a big difference.
